Did you know that a teenager named Boyan Slat invented "the Ocean Cleanup", which scoops up plastic from the massive pool of ocean garbage? This system connects a line of booms designed like a free-floating coastline which herds the plastic trash into retrievable piles. First proposed in 2012, the project has received $30 million in donations from sponsors, philanthropists and crowdfunding.
A few weeks ago, the Ocean Cleanup was launched from Alameda, California with hopes that the system will remove 90% of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2040. In 2015 scientists estimated that the size of the Garbage Patch was twice as big as Texas and included about 1.8 TRILLION pieces of debris!
What ideas do you have to help protect and preserve our precious environment? An invention like a boom system sounds so simple yet look at the potential! It's time to start brainstorming!
